Short film competition “Beyond the market”

Resolved call
11 December 2024 — 20 January 2025

Fundación RIA launches the short film competition ‘Beyond the market’ to make visible and value the role of the workers in the Galician food markets. This call is part of the public programme of activities in the framework of the next exhibition to be held at Casa RIA, the headquarters of Fundación RIA.

The aim of this competition is to promote short films that show the day-to-day life of a person involved in the management of a fish, meat or vegetable stall in a food market. The videos must document not only the activity in the market, but also outside it: the relationship with the people who supply the products, fish markets, the management of their own farms, etc.

This is intended to highlight the relevance of local production and the close connection that those who work in the marketplaces maintain with their community and the territory. The representation of the market as a vital space in the daily life of the market vendors will be an essential element to be considered in the proposals, showing how this environment becomes a fundamental meeting point between producers and consumers.

Entries may explore different aspects, such as commuting, time management over the course of a day or a week, interaction with producers and consumers, the value of local food, the work-life balance, etc.

The short films will address one of the following topics:
—‘Beyond a fish stall’
—‘Beyond a fish stall’
—‘Beyond a meat stall’

The best videos will receive prizes of €1,000, €300 and €200 and will be shown at the Casa RIA exhibition space during the next market exhibition.

The jury that will evaluate the entries is made up of:
Ana Amado, photographer, architect and artist
—Celeste Chipperfield, director of Casa RIA‘s public programme
—Amaia Roldán, curator of Cuarto Pexigo

The reception of candidatures is open until 20 January 2025 at 2 p.m. CET, by sending an email to concursos@fundacionria.org, following the instructions in the competition brief.
