An architecture competition to shape the future of A Pobra do Caramiñal’s seafront

26 May 2025

The initiative stems from two collaboration agreements: one between the local council and Fundación RIA, and another between the council and the Galician Architects’ Association. The competition, to be announced next month, will select a winning team to draw up a masterplan for the town’s coastal edge, with a focus on people, public space and the territory.

The local council of A Pobra do Caramiñal, Fundación RIA and the Galician Architects’ Association (COAG) are working together to launch an architecture competition that will shape the future of the town’s seafront. This strategic planning process, which will guide the town’s urban transformation, is made possible through the signing of two collaboration agreements: one between the council and Fundación RIA, and another between the council and COAG.

This joint effort will enable the launch, next month, of an open call for proposals to develop the seafront masterplan. Once announced, a submissions period will begin for candidates to take part. The aim is to establish a new model of interaction between the town and its coastal edge, grounded in a people-centred, public space- and territory-oriented approach.

COAG is providing administrative and methodological support for the process. It is also advising the council on the implementation and development of the competition, with a particular focus on ensuring the feasibility and rigour of the competition brief from a technical and urban planning perspective. COAG will also promote the call among architects throughout Spain to encourage broad participation.

Fundación RIA has worked closely with the council on site analysis, the drafting of technical specifications, setting design criteria, and coordinating the stakeholders involved in the competition. The initiative, which aims to set a benchmark for best practice, is supported by The MOP Foundation, which is contributing funding towards the preliminary studies and analysis, as well as co-financing the competition prizes and other associated costs.
