Carballeda de Avia resolved the competition for the social centre in Muimenta
The Council of Carballeda de Avia has resolved this week the competition for the social centre of Muimenta, called at the end of July with the financial support of the MOP Foundation and the technical support of Fundación RIA. The winning proposal, ‘Socalcos’, has been selected from among thirty candidates, and will be appointed to draw up the project for the new social centre of the village.
In this process, RIA has participated in the design of a functional programme that allows the rehabilitation and transformation of a ruin and its estate in Muimenta, based on a rigorous analysis of the needs, the environment and the stakeholders involved.
The programme of uses has been designed to establish this new facility as a social reference point – not only for the village, but for the entire municipality – with two main objectives: to foster social relations among an ageing population and to serve as a meeting point and support for the process of regeneration and territorial transformation of the village.
With this intention, the competition rules have directed the design of the social centre as a flexible, multifunctional space, allowing the development of social, cultural, recreational, economic or training activities, promoting intergenerational relations of the community of Muimenta, both the existing and the new inhabitants.
The jury, composed of representatives of the Council of Carballeda de Avia and the Chamber of Architects of Galicia, has particularly valued the care with which the winning proposal integrates the pre-existing elements of the site, ‘highlighting what is relevant in a simple manner’.
The selected project, entitled ‘Socalcos’, has been highlighted for its capacity to conserve the characteristics of the terrain, avoiding significant alterations and maintaining a strong link with the natural topography of the plot.

The three winning proposals will receive economic awards of 8.000 €, 6.000 € and 4.000 €.
