David Chipperfield joins the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences with a call to support local initiatives

18 September 2025

The president of Fundación RIA was appointed as corresponding member of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences, where he underlined the importance of strengthening collaboration between professions, institutions and community. In his address he encouraged the Academy to share its knowledge with local initiatives, contributing to their development and consolidation.

At the ceremony held in Santiago de Compostela, David Chipperfield delivered his inaugural lecture titled Common Ground as new corresponding member of the Galician Royal Academy of Sciences. Throughout his speech, he stressed the need to find common ground and to join efforts in order to address environmental, territorial and social challenges more effectively.

One of his main contributions was the call to support initiatives emerging from the territory, often with limited resources and facing difficulties in accessing technical or institutional support.

David Chipperfield highlighted:

“In considering the task of revitalising the rural, we have witnessed how alone and disconnected are the local initiatives. How much need they have for administrative, legal, technical, scientific support.
In our mission to encourage the promoting these initiatives, we want to give visibility and encourage the creation and consolidation of what we can call facilitating entities.”

The full lecture, under the title Common Ground, is published openly and available for consultation in Galician, Spanish and English.
