Muimenta moves towards a pioneering model of public rural coliving
Muimenta is entering a new phase in its revitalisation process with the launch of Muimenta viva, an initiative aimed at activating the village’s new community facilities. Through a call for applications until 5 June, the project seeks to select a facilitator who will live in the village for six months in order to promote cultural, social and community activities linked to the territorial revitalisation strategy developed in recent years.
The village of Muimenta, in the municipality of Carballeda de Avia, is beginning a new stage in its revitalisation process with the launch of Muimenta viva, an initiative focused on activating the village’s new community facilities — public housing, a community kitchen and a social centre — while advancing the consolidation of an innovative public model for coexistence, entrepreneurship and territorial revitalisation in rural Galicia.
On Friday 15 May, the open call was launched to select the coordinator of the project through a six-month stay in the village, beginning on 15 June. Their work will focus on organising activities with the local community, artistic residencies, and cultural and social initiatives aimed at activating community life and attracting new productive dynamics to the territory.
The project is promoted by the Regional Ministry of Employment, Commerce and Emigration and the Municipality of Carballeda de Avia, in collaboration with organisations such as Sende and Anceu Coliving, responsible for coordinating and facilitating the initiative, and Fundación RIA, which provides technical support throughout the process.
The initiative builds on several years of work around an integrated territorial revitalisation strategy in Muimenta designed by Fundación RIA, recently recognised by Spain’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda with the La Casa de la Arquitectura Award in the Public Action category for its innovative approach to rural revitalisation through planning, architecture and institutional collaboration. The interventions developed within this strategy, which will host the residency, have also received recognition: the rehabilitation of the public housing project was awarded at the COAG Gran de Area Awards, while the new Muimenta social centre was selected for the 2026 CSCAE Architecture Awards.
