The Common Grounds residency comes to an end in Bulgaria

9 July 2026

The three selected artists –Virgile Haëck, Andrea Popyordanova and Mar Ramón Soriano– spent three months exploring the environmental and heritage issues surrounding Stochna Gara, in Sofia.

The final stop on the Common Grounds residency programme, following stays in Marseille and Galicia, focused on the now-abandoned Stochna Gara railway station, whose industrial past has affected the health of the soil, now posing a challenge to the site’s regeneration process.

The issues associated with the place, situated in downtown Sofia, were the focus of the research and creative work of the three artists, who collaborated with scientific experts and local communities.

To conclude the residency, an event was held at which the artists presented a series of artistic interventions on the land surrounding the station. The closing event also featured representatives from Fundación Montescola and the Uxafores-USC research group, who shared their experience in ecological restoration and soil analysis.

Common Grounds is an initiative by La Citadelle de Marseille, Gradoscope and Fundación RIA, co-funded by the European Union and Fundación Carasso.
