The estate of A Panda da Dá will be a space for opportunities in the Galician forestry sector
Finsa will launch next month an architectural competition organised with the support of Fundación RIA, with the aim of consolidating A Panda da Dá as a space of opportunities for the sustainable management of the territory.
After more than 30 years developing sustainable forestry activities in this area, the timber company is taking a step forward to promote the estate as a place of opportunities in the forestry sector. The 410 ha estate – located mostly in the municipality of As Pontes – was acquired by Finsa in 1989. Since then, the company has been carrying out forestry activities based on a pioneering management model, which allows it to learn and disseminate good practices, as well as certifying timber production with the main sustainability seals.
Currently, the main use of the estate is timber exploitation based on plantations of different species, mostly Pinus radiata, a species of great interest due to the quality of the wood and its applications for different uses, in which the construction of houses in CLT manufactured in Xilonor with the Pino de Galicia brand stands out.
Also noteworthy is the existence on the estate of a valuable deciduous riverside forest, streams, mills and a hydroelectric power generator. Finsa is developing a project to certify the estate for its ecosystem services, in collaboration with Professor Adolfo Cordero, from the Department of Ecology of the School of Forestry Engineering of the University of Vigo.
The architectural competition to be launched in November aims to enhance all this capital of A Panda da Dá, rehabilitating its buildings to create new opportunities in training and research areas. In addition, the refurbished spaces will host visits from entities linked to the management of the territory and the wood value chain.
More details on the characteristics and dates of the call will be available in th coming weeks.
