The new social centre will strengthen community life in Muimenta
The new social centre in Muimenta represents another step in the village’s revitalisation strategy, launched in 2020 by the Council of Carballeda de Avia and Fundación RIA, which began with Muimenta’s inclusion in the Xunta de Galicia’s Model Villages programme.
Since the launch of this programme, several strategic actions have been developed aimed at recovering built heritage, supporting productive activity and strengthening community life. Alongside the creation of a community kitchen, the rehabilitation of buildings for public housing and improvements to public space, the need was identified for a flexible space capable of hosting neighbourhood meetings, workshops, care-related activities and shared workspaces that could reinforce the village’s social life.
Within this strategy, a former house in a state of ruin was identified. The building had been unused for decades and had been affected by the wildfires that have impacted this territory in recent years. The recovery of this existing structure was understood as an opportunity to provide the village with a new community facility while also rehabilitating its built heritage. With this objective, and with the support of Fundación MOP, an architectural competition was launched by the Council of Carballeda de Avia, coordinated by Fundación RIA and with the administrative support of COAG. The initiative aims to support small administrations in organising public competitions and to promote a culture of architecture based on quality and sustainability.
The winning proposal —developed by Firm Architects, Eduardo Dipre Mazza and Miguel Ángel Díaz González— now takes shape in this new social centre. The intervention combines the recovery of pre-existing elements with the introduction of contemporary architecture integrated into the surrounding landscape and adapted to the needs of the community.
Work is currently underway to integrate this facility into a pilot rural coliving programme aimed at attracting new residents and revitalising local life. Drawing on other experiences, the feasibility of a future coliving initiative in Muimenta is now being explored.
