Competition to rethink the seafront of a Galician town

Santiago de Compostela, 20 June 2025 — The council of A Pobra do Caramiñal, a small coastal town in Galicia (northwest Spain), has launched an international design competition to develop a strategic masterplan for its seafront. Coordinated by Fundación RIA, the non-profit independent agency founded by David Chipperfield, the process invites proposals that address the reorganisation of public space, mobility, and the weekly street market.

The call is made possible thanks to the collaboration of The MOP Foundation (Marta Ortega Pérez) with Fundación RIA, funding the technical, human and financial resources required to assist local councils in launching high-quality architecture and urban planning competitions.

The competition will award €33,000 in prizes (€20,000 / €8,000 / €5,000) and commission the winning team to develop the masterplan under a €50,000 contract. The competition is open, single-phase and anonymous, and is officially published on the Spanish Public Procurement Platform. Proposals can be submitted over a 60-day period.

This single-phase, anonymous competition is supported by the Galician Architects’ Association (COAG), which provides administrative and legal oversight. The jury will include the mayor and the municipal architect of A Pobra do Caramiñal; a representative of the Galician Association of Civil Engineers; and three respected and awarded architects such as Alfonso Salgado (Salgado e Liñares), Elizabeth Abalo (Abalo Alonso Arquitectos), Marcial Rodríguez (RVR Arquitectos).
