‘Design for Living’ brings together a selection of objects developed by David Chipperfield Design over the last 35 years. Reflecting on the design process, the exhibition questions, at a time of social change and environmental crisis, what should be the role of design in using resources more responsibly, reinforcing local identities and values, and adopting an approach rooted in the territory and in everyday life.

Beginning with the design of a house in Corrubedo in the early 2000s, David Chipperfield Design established an increasingly close relationship with Galicia, which has been a growing source of inspiration in recent years. In this sense, the exhibition highlights Galicia’s long history of ‘making’, looking back at traditional production methods that used local resources and drawing attention to the contribution of innovative Galician companies that operate on a global scale.

‘Design for Living’ transcends the traditional exhibition room, expanding over the first two floors of Casa RIA, where the furniture already present in the building is complemented by a wide selection of objects, sketches, magazines, process photographs, materials, models, prototypes and references. This provides a comprehensive overview of the design process and raises several questions:

What should be the role of design in the current context? How might a renewed commitment to regional traditions, local materials and an understanding of the consequences of industrial production shape the ways we design, make and distribute objects? What is design in Galicia?

Free guided tours on Saturdays 7 and 21 March at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm (40 min duration). Book yours at eventos@casaria.org
