«Santiago urbs, Compostela civitas»: Xerardo Estévez and Alfonso Salgado on Santiago’s urban and heritage challenges

The session will reflect on how a historic city such as Santiago de Compostela addresses today the challenges of heritage conservation and urban transformation, exploring the dilemmas that arise when balancing the protection of its historic legacy with the need to adapt to contemporary dynamics.
Drawing on their professional experience and their direct relationship with the city, Estévez and Salgado will revisit some of the issues that have shaped Santiago’s development over recent decades, as well as the tensions and opportunities involved in managing a living heritage city.
Xerardo Estévez, architect and professor, served as mayor of Santiago de Compostela between 1987 and 1998, a period during which significant urban and heritage transformations were promoted in the historic city.
Alfonso Salgado is an architect and professor at the School of Architecture in A Coruña and co-founder of the Salgado e Liñares studio, with a trajectory closely linked to work in heritage contexts.
The conference will take place at Casa RIA (Virxe da Cerca, 6) from 10:00 to 12:00. Due to limited capacity, prior registration is required via eventos@casaria.org.
